SUMUD QUM Steadfastness, Memory, and Rebuilding Gaza Sumud Qum was born from loss and shaped by responsibility. The word Sumud means steadfastness, the ability to remain rooted despite destruction. Qum means to rise and to stand up. Together, they reflect a collective refusal to disappear and a commitment to rebuilding with dignity. Led by Chilean women of Palestinian origin, Sumud Qum is grounded in intergenerational memory, cultural inheritance, and a deep sense of duty toward Palestine. What began as a small community effort has grown into years of consistent and sustained solidarity. This is not a momentary response. It is long term work carried out with care, patience, and quiet determination. At Sumud Qum, creation is never neutral. Art and craftsmanship are used as tools to preserve identity, protect memory, and transform cultural expression into tangible support. Each handmade piece carries meaning and purpose, ensuring that memory becomes action and care becomes continuity. For over a year, Sumud Qum has supported humanitarian projects in Gaza carried out in partnership with RebuildGaza24. This includes supporting an operational water well supplying clean drinking water to approximately twenty thousand people, as well as helping deliver tents to families displaced by storms since November 2024. Their focus remains on those most often excluded, families with no access to social media, no fundraising networks, and no way to ask for help themselves. The origin of Sumud Qum is itself an act of testimony. The project began with the recovery of a fragment from a bombed house in Gaza. This fragment was preserved not as debris but as evidence of lived reality and human loss. It travelled across borders and continents and was later incorporated into the Palestino Football Club flag during an international championship, carrying Gaza’s story into spaces where it is too often erased. Today, fragments of destruction are preserved in resin, not to aestheticise suffering, but to refuse forgetting. Rubble becomes witness. Memory becomes responsibility. One hundred percent of proceeds from Sumud Qum’s work are directed toward humanitarian aid and reconstruction projects in Gaza, including water, shelter, food distribution, and direct assistance to families who have lost everything. Sumud Qum demonstrates what solidarity looks like when it is ethical, sustained, and deeply human. It is not charity. It is commitment. It is presence. It is the work of remembering and rebuilding at the same time. To learn more and to support this work, including the story documented by Al Jazeera of a fragment of Gaza that travelled from rubble into the world, you can access Sumud Qum through the RebuildGaza24 donation page, where their work is linked directly.
